Ellipsis w/ Bunny Hoova + Gribs

Join Ellipsis for an evening of live music. As well as playing live, they have also curated the evening's line up, coaxing the incredible Bunny Hoova to London for her first live show with a full band in the city! Her 'LONGING' LP on Them There Records has been making waves with The FADER. Other such publications are clearly smitten with Bunny's exquisite avant-pop guitar, irresitable vocals, drums and electronic layers. Undoubtedly what is garnering requests for her to support artists like Tirzah.

Co-running the TT/Tobago Tracks label, Gribs has amassed an impressive collection of the most cutting-edge electronic music. Effortlessly sliding between bass, jungle and trap genres, her online mixes are an experience, DJing with so many new and emerging sounds, it is impossible to categorize.

J.b. Glazer joins on the decks for some extra shapes

The Body You're In // Pamphlet Launch

Join us for a night of poetry to celebrate Phoebe's debut pamphlet 'The Body You're In' with Bad Betty Press

Phoebe Wagner’s poetry is a kind of undressing. Offering up the social and sexual uncertainties of our time, she forges these into a bolder understanding of contemporary angst. Language heady as Plath melts into a precise, Carson-like wit. Wagner’s voice is a reflexive one, referencing therapists, care plans, bingo tickets, pick-up lines, familial myths: ‘Abuela knew I was the devil when I came out like that. / That all of Spain had bled out of me.’ Formally inventive, highly visual, these poems ripple through the mind, at once cleansing and intoxicating.

‘This pamphlet pinches the skin of woman, of lust, of politics.’

Sweet Heave  EP Launch

Celebrate the launch of Sweet Heave's first EP against our swishy crushed velvet curtain backdrop.

SWEET HEAVE have been described as...

*Hypnogogic neo-post-punk, swirling within pareidolic mists of sawtooth drone and dusty guitar melancholia. It wanders somewhere between sonic motifs of ethereal wave and the dusty tremolo and slow march of a Morricone soundtrack.*

*A hot, wet sonic bubblebath. Sweeter than is comfortable.*

*What happens when melancholia meets discord, when being meets absence. Laura Dee Milnes, Phil Swan and Mike Barrett trace dream-pop, spoken word and jagged lines while always appearing to disappear.*

*A pop soundtrack to a cybernetic fantasy-western written by N. Katherine Hayles and Directed by David Cronenberg.*

*A sympathetic velvet caress at the end of the world we know.*

With support from:

*mind-melting intergalactic bubblegum synth-pop*

*krautrocky techno noise jams*

SetPiece Taylor & Thompson / Durrant & Vishnick / Urethra Franklin

Prominent figures in the UK & European improvised music world, Benedict Taylor (viola) and Daniel Thompson (guitar), have been playing and curating together as a duo alongside a number of larger ensembles, since 2010. Appearing together on a number of notable improvised music albums. Their debut duo release is currently being prepared for release in 2019

-- --

Phil Durrant and Martin Vishnic's pairing of mandolin and guitar is a tradition in many musical fields but virtually unknown in the world of free improvisation. This context and combination lends a certain uniqueness to such a collaboration of established musicians. Together they explore extended techniques influenced in part by electronic music. Performing regularly in the UK, they have graced the stages of venues such as Mopomoso, Flim Flam, Horse Improvised Music Club, Safehouse, and SkronkFest2018.

Urethra Franklin brings together a first meeting of a new group that includes:

Pascal Colman (guitar)
Merlin Nova (drums)
Sylvia Silas (voice)
Seb Silas (tenor saxophone)

Pen-Ting Vol. 20 Post Pride Power

Curated poetry evening that sports open mic opportunities, also a PTP Cypher after the main event, with the opportunity to spit your piece over a selection of beats from DJs until 11pm. Hosted by The Repeat Beat Poet with Solomons Soul on the decks.

This month’s theme is a celebration of all things and people LGBTQI+ in the aftermath of this year's Pride (and UK Black Pride) marches.

Whether you're still brushing glitter from your clothes, or a supporting ally, if you want to highlight Pride's origins in the Stonewall Riots, condemn rainbow capitalism, or share a story in solidarity, it will all be a part of us asking: how can we hold onto and use this energy and power to facilitate the change we need to see?

With poetry from:

London based, Rick Dove

And from the ::nana:: collectiveRakaya Fetuga

The Slinks Edinburgh Preview

An XXXXTRA special preview for one night only before they "cafe du depart" for the Edinburgh Festival. The Slinks are functioning performaholics, they live and breathe the stage but they never quite manage to leave their dressing room.

In this one-hour debut you can expect music, dance, sequins, laughter, tears, mime and a lot of smoke and mirrors. Set in real time to a live one-man-band, The Slinks descend into the lunacy of an anxious actor and her paranoia of being hated or ever worse…loved!

Over-dramatic, narcissistic actress Mrs Slink is waited on hand, foot and finger by Mr Slink, a hyper sensitive cross-dressing clown. The Slinks are mesmerised by performance, and desperate to untangle the politics of human companionship.

Their creators, avant-garde performer Lily Ashley and pianist and clown Hugo Hamlet, weave their wry magic with sleight of hand, and a never-ending fascination for performance. Together they bring an experience that is heart-thumpingly alive.

Palingenesis by Simona Sharafudinov

Have you ever mistook desire for love? Pain for pleasure? Sex for intimacy? Hope for a promise? Symbolic for the real? Tapping into the sensitivity and vibration of the moment to let go and fall into an active volcano; enduring simultaneous death and birth.

Wounded shapes leaning against walls are part of a new body of work by artist Simona Sharafudinov, as she continues her explorative devotion to the sentience of being through image-making. In this new series of works: drawings, paintings and moving images, is a silent disclosure, an emptying of impressions and failures in desire, intimacy and love. To mark raw hurt is to give thanks to intense joy.  In error begins truth.

Short Straw by Ballpark Collective // Artlicks Weekend 2019

Ballpark Collective has responded to the 2019 Art Licks theme 'Interdependence' by reflecting it within an experimental working process. Drawing on the games ‘Chinese Whispers’ and ‘Consequences’ as a metaphor for information exchange and interpretation, together they have made one moving image work from five individual sections, each made by one of the artists. No discussion happened between the artists outside of this ritual of passing their work to the next, allowing for a journey of "collision", subjectivity, interpretation, and unknown communications.

Sexy Pizza Dance 💋🕺🏻🍕 by Guillaume Vandame

"I started going to therapy in the autumn 2018 and slowly realised that I saw a lot of my life in black and white, either it was a wonderland or totally worthless. This resulted in two distinct bodies of work and, then, I developed a third body of work "The Pizza Paintings". I could finally feel a grey area where I could be happy with something just the way it is and not change it. Life was no longer black or white, but red and green coming beautifully together."

Sexy Pizza Dance is a selection of bold, new, homoerotic paintings from the The Pizza Paintings, a series of works that began in 2018. The series also includes sculptural assemblages from Vandame's ongoing collection of pizza boxes kept as a personal momento. Since 2017, Vandame's style began to distinctly merge the Pop sensibilities of Warhol, with the immediacy and raw emotion of Abstract-Expressionism, in particular referencing the crudeness of De Kooning and the Color Field paintings of

Guillaume Vandame (b. 1991, New York) lives and works in London. He studied art history at SOAS, University of London and graduated with a BA in 2013 and an MA in Contemporary Art and Art Theory from Asia and Africa in 2015. In addition to his practice as an artist and writer, he collaborates with Josh Wright as the artist collective, Wright & Vandame.

Kahoon Projects II | Word of Mouth

Word of Mouth is the latest exhibition brought to you by Kahoon Projects

In installation format that evokes "rave space and attitude",  artists Mitchell Vowles & Morgan Tipping exhibit two specially produced films.

It’s still banging in 2019 excavates online representations of youth cultures montaged across a timeline that explores the romance of the future as replaced by the romance of the past.

Manoeuvres is a digital film projection that explores contemporary experiences of working culture through a roaming atmospheric landscape.

Referencing the Kinks song and lyrics, Word of Mouth invites you to question "who are they to say the things they do?"

Kahoon Projects is a discursive platform that examines working-class identity in the 21st century through contemporary art practice. Kahoon Projects consists of a series of collaborative, interdisciplinary residencies where, for one month, two artists are paired to develop a conversation, and to create new work, about social class.

Kahoon Projects is supported by Arts Council England and Oxford Brookes University

Once Upon A Stage installation by Lizz Brady

"As one person enters the room, they trigger the sound of one person clapping. Two more people enter the room, and the sound of two more people begin to clap. The more people in the room, the more people are clapping. As people leave the room, the clapping resides."

Exploring ideas of dualism, 'object-oriented ontology' and Buddhism,  Lizzy Brady's Once Upon A Stage shows how the mind and body are statements that cannot be divided, instead they experienced as different states of the whole

Becoming Secret Branch

Private view: 1 MAY 18.00 - 21.00

2 - 4 MAY 11.00 - 17.00

Please join us at SET for a celebratory exhibition by Secret Branch. We will be presenting a comprehensive display of our activities as sb, including artworks and actions, a small publication and some hopefully delicious drinks.Secret Branch was a make-believe gallery department and invigilator working-project. It was found in whispers, daydreams, doodles and dance routines. It lived in stretching our bodies and trying to bend time, in standing stories and standing stillness. A seemingly passive position, a tiny speck of light redirected, a root digging down beneath the concrete floor.
