SUMMARY:Furnishing Shangri-La
DESCRIPTION:Dates: 16 October – 15 NovemberPublic opening event: Thursday 15 October\, 6-9pm Gallery hours: Thursday – Sunday\, 1-6pmAdmission: Free \n\n\n\nSET 91 presents Furnishing Shangri-La\, a solo exhibition by Meitao Qu. Drawing on the building’s connection to East London’s 19th-century furniture trade\, Qu explores how decorative forms and fantasies of the ‘good life’ are reproduced and transformed as they move between cultures through mass production. \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition\n\n\n\nTaking inspiration from the site’s historical connection to East London’s furniture trade in the 19th century\, Qu presents new sculptural works exploring the politics of decoration and the home as a site of aspiration\, status and spectacle. The exhibition traces the circulation of taste and style between East and West\, focusing particularly on the reproduction of European historicism in contemporary China through the idea of ‘synthetic occidenterie.’ \n\n\n\nArchitectural and decorative motifs are mimicked\, stretched and distorted\, becoming at once familiar and uncanny. Entering the gallery\, visitors encounter an oversized toy box containing a dollhouse model mounted on a flatbed trolley. Adapting the aesthetic of the European mansion into a repeated high-rise apartment block\, the work draws parallels between the world of children’s toys and the standardised repertoire of buildings that populate idealised visions of urban development. Beyond the entryway\, a circular sculpture takes the form of a Victorian ‘borne’ settee\, with a central octagonal fluted column clad in Chinoiserie wallpaper panels reproduced from a 19th-century hand-painted wallpaper from Guangzhou\, China\, held in the V&A collection.Through these reinterpretations\, Qu considers how ideas of taste and the ‘good life’ shift as they move between cultures\, and how mass production both democratises and transforms the hallmarks of luxury. \n\n\n\nLearn more\n\n\n\nAbout SET 91\n\n\n\nSET 91 is SET’s first in-house curated contemporary arts gallery\, located in Old Street. Dedicated to supporting early-career contemporary artists\, the gallery provides a non-profit platform for experimentation\, collaboration\, and the presentation of new work beyond commercial pressures. \n\n\n\nLearn more

SUMMARY:What Is It That We Are Looking For
DESCRIPTION:Public opening event: Thursday 22 October\, 6-9pmExhibition dates: 23 October – 1 NovemberOpening hours: Daily\, 12-6pmLocation: SET Lewisham\, Unit 1\, Lewisham Retail Park\, Loampit Vale\, London\, SE13 7RZArtists: Alfie Sellers\, Isla Jones\, Katie Gordon\, Keziah Mornin\, Lâl Yılmaz\, Lily Hall\, Octavia Inns\, Soul Baraitser\, Thomas HoulihanAdmission: Free \n\n\n\nBringing together nine artists whose practices share a foundation of drawing and close observation\, What Is It That We Are Looking For presents work informed by transformation\, looking at reality from a distance – or through a microscope – through a veil of memory\, fiction\, and the unknown. The exhibition explores the feeling of reaching out and then moving closer\, looking beyond what is immediately visible toward the unseen or overlooked. Fragmentary moments and fleeting encounters become suspended\, then start to shapeshift until they are almost unrecognisable. The longer we look\, the more things seem to change. \n\n\n\nAcross the works\, common threads emerge in atmosphere and in the space between the familiar and the faraway; in encountering one another and our surroundings\, and in the ambiguity of everyday experience. Within the exhibition\, individual practices come into dialogue\, exploring both intimate and encompassing scales and a range of material processes\, all whilst holding onto a shared preoccupation with strange beauty and nonlinear narratives. \n\n\n\nContributing artists\n\n\n\nAlfie Sellers\nThrough predominantly sculpture and drawing Alfie Sellers’ practice reflects on toys and artefacts\, chronology and yearning\, sci-fi and the day-to-day\, and how fiction and genre leak into real life.Instagram: @alfiesellers \n\n\n\n\nIsla Jones\nIn her work\, Isla Jones explores dreamscapes and imagined futures that make space for the figure to be depicted unusually\, often through a sense of mutation\, fragmentation and distortion. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @strangeislandWebsite: islajones.co.uk \n\n\n\n\nKatie Gordon\nKatie Gordon’s work centres around grief and sickness\, hoping to shed light on topics like caregiving and terminal illness. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @katiegordon_Website: katiegordon.myportfolio.com \n\n\n\n\nKeziah Mornin\nKeziah Mornin uses cinematic devices to frame narratives and reveries from her own life. She’s interested in conveying a tangible atmosphere\, inviting the viewer to pause for a moment with her. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @morninkeziah \n\n\n\n\nLâl Yılmaz\nLâl Yılmaz views the process of image making as almost alchemical\, revealing layers of thought and emotion that emerge from the subconscious. Through an evolving archive of symbols\, she creates worlds that are at once intimate and vast\, familiar yet strange.Instagram: @lalyilmaz \n\n\n\n\nLily Hall\nLily Hall’s work is rooted in atmospheric storytelling and the unknown\, translating in-between spaces like thresholds and crossroads into charged and dreamlike environments. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @l.hall_art \n\n\n\n\nOctavia Inns\nOctavia Inns explores observations of the everyday through memory and imagination\, alongside figurative elements and presences that visualise the feeling of being in a particular space at a particular time. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @octaviainnsartWebsite: octaviainns.com \n\n\n\n\nSoul Baraitser\nSoul Baraitser’s work engages with the unconscious\, dreams and nightmares\, and how such psychological phenomena might be given material form. The imagery often centres ambiguous groupings caught in dramatic yet uncertain events. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @soulbaraitser \n\n\n\n\nThomas Houlihan\nThomas Houlihan’s practice is rooted in drawing from observation and memory\, allowing lived experience to serve as a starting point to craft imagined scenes of the absurd and wonderful in the everyday. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @tomhoulihan_Website: thomashoulihan.com \n\n\n\n\nAbout SET’s Associate Members Programme\n\n\n\nThis exhibition is presented as part of SET’s Associate Members Programme\, which offers artists studio space\, alongside access to project spaces and opportunities to independently curate or participate exhibitions\, workshops\, and events. \n\n\n\nThe programme supports a wide range of practices\, from performance and installation to music\, sound\, print\, and textiles\, and is designed to provide space\, visibility\, and development opportunities for early-career and underrepresented artists working in London. \n\n\n\nArtwork featured on poster by Soul Baraitser.

SUMMARY:Permacomputing Club
DESCRIPTION:Date: Every MondayTime: 6.30-7.30pmLocation: SET Social\, 55A Nigel Road\, Peckham\, London\, SE15 4NPAdmission: Free entry\, RSVP optional \n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\nHow can we rethink our relationship to harmful technologies? \n\n\n\nEvery Monday evening\, SET Social hosts the Permacomputing Club – a community gathering dedicated to cultivating resilient\, sustainable\, and low-tech alternatives to modern computing. Driven by anti-capitalist values\, the project builds a space in direct opposition to harmful tech monopolies and resource-heavy systems like AI. The club’s ethos is deeply inspired by permaculture and degrowth\, and guided by decolonial thinking and intersectional feminism. \n\n\n\nRather than focusing on tech “solutionism” or inventing greener gadgets\, this is a collaborative space centered on how hardware and software can prioritise adaptability\, transparency\, and care. Sessions emphasise collective discussion and hands-on maintenance over solo tinkering. Drop in to share skills\, explore regenerative computing\, practice repair\, and strategise ways to reduce the stranglehold of these pernicious systems. \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome\, and the club particularly encourages women and non-binary folks to join us. Please bring your own tech\, and take a moment to read the club’s guiding principles at permacomputing.net/Principles before attending. \n\n\n\nThe club also hosts occasional workshops. SUMMARY:SET Film Festival 2026 - Night #1: Impossible Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday 5 NovemberTime: Doors from 6:45pm | Screenings start 7.30pm promptLocation: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham\, London\, SE15 4NPAdmission: £9 general admission / £7 concessions \n\n\n\nBook tickets\n\n\n\nThe opening night of SET Film Festival 2026 presents Impossible Cinema\, a programme of four short films that explore the possibilities of impossible cinema. \n\n\n\nAcross these frustrated\, imaginary and improvised forms\, cinema emerges not as a finished object but as a site of interruption\, refusal and creative ‘making-do’. In these works\, encounters with borders\, bureaucracy and censorship pose challenges to conventions of filmic completion\, and prompt experimental improvisations using surviving or sufficient materials. Rather than treat impossibility as a failure\, these films reclaim it as a productive condition: opening up new relationships between fiction and documentary\, memory and performance\, archive and invention. \n\n\n\nIn Maryam Tarfakory’s Razeh-del\, appropriated footage from post-revolutionary Iranian cinema tells a story of censorship through two schoolgirls and their ‘synopsis for an impossible film’. Scoping footage of Helsinki at night\, a NATO nuclear exercise and Finnish Eurovision lyrics combine in Jani Peltonen’s Equal Dust\, while in Basma Al-sharif’s Old Masters\, two protagonists wander through Gothenburg’s Museum of Art and a Gazan orange grove\, contemplating the politics of image-preservation and the role of the witness in political violence. Oleksiy Radynski’s Where Russia Ends resurrects the undiscovered footage of a Soviet-era Ukrainian film expedition to Siberia\, reconstructing an erased history of Russia’s imperialist wars and resource extraction\, while interrogating the contemporary politics of land sovereignty and liberation. \n\n\n\nThe evening begins at 7.30pm with an introduction by Phoebe Campion\, followed by the screening. Doors open at 6.45pm. \n\n\n\nFilms in the programme\n\n\n\nEqual Dust\n\n\n\n\nJani Peltonen | 2025 | 14 minutes | Finnish \n\n\n\nIn November 1983\, a camera test records a nocturnal journey through Helsinki\, just as NATO’s Able Archer military exercise simulates the outbreak of nuclear war\, with Finland cast as a battlefield between East and West. Blurring the line between real and imaginary\, factual and counterfactual\, Equal Dust transforms the haunting footage into a survey of possible destruction\, drawing on a series of camp 1980s Finnish Eurovision entries as a counter-archive of Cold War  public consciousness. \n\n\n\n\nRazeh-del\n\n\n\n\nMaryam Tafakory | 2025 | 27 minutes | Persian \n\n\n\nWeaving fact and fabulation\, Razeh-del (‘Secret of the Heart’) tells the story of Zan\, the first Iranian women’s newspaper\, whose brief run under the Iranian regime in the late 1990s inspires two schoolgirls to contemplate a synopsis for ‘an impossible film’. Narrated through dense layers of newsprint\, saturated archival footage and fragmented sound\, this imaginary film – an illicit affair between two women and their plot to set fire to the Iranian Ministry of Culture – becomes a fiction through which Tarfakory investigates the censorship of female desire and the politics of Iranian cinematic representation. \n\n\n\n\nOld Masters\n\n\n\n\nBasma Alsharif | 2025 | 14 minutes \n\n\n\nInspired by Gus Van Sant’s film Elephant (2003) and Alan Clarke’s earlier work (1989) of the same name\, Old Masters follows two protagonists walking through the Gothenburg Museum of Art and an orange garden in Gaza. In conversation with fellow artists\, Al-Sharif reflects on the role of witnessing and representing extreme violence. Drawing a stark contrast between what is preserved and what is destroyed\, the film asks what it means to make images during and after genocide. \n\n\n\n\nWhere Russia Ends\n\n\n\n\nOleksiy Radynski | 2024 | 25 minutes | Ukrainian \n\n\n\nWhere Russia Ends assembles previously unknown footage shot by Ukrainian filmmakers during expeditions to Siberia and the Far North in the late 1980s\, and rediscovered at the Kyiv Popular Science Film Studio in 2022. Reading this Soviet-era archive against the grain\, Radynski traces an often-overlooked history of Russian colonial expansion and environmental destruction in the territories of the Indigenous peoples of Siberia. Rediscovered amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine\, these images bring histories of Tsarist and Soviet imperialism into the present\, tracing continuities that are far from over. \n\n\n\n\nTickets and booking\n\n\n\n\nGeneral admission: £9\n\n\n\nConcessions: £7\n\n\n\nFestival passes: £32 for one or £52 for two\n\n\n\n\nEach ticket includes a printed programme. SUMMARY:SET Film Festival 2026 - Night #2: Plot Twist
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday 12 NovemberTime: Doors from 6:45pm | Screenings start 7.30pm promptLocation: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham\, London\, SE15 4NPAdmission: £9 general admission / £7 concessions \n\n\n\nBook tickets\n\n\n\nSET presents a programme of five films exploring the surreal\, the silly and the unexpected. Playing with performance and improvisation\, they move between the everyday and the existential\, finding humour in situations where the plot unravels and nothing quite goes to plan. \n\n\n\nFeaturing a strange cigarette-break reverie\, best friends on a shoplifting spree\, a strangely romantic fishing trip-cum-stag do\, an intimate conversation in bed and an extra wandering around a replica of the American Museum of Natural History\, these films are best watched with an appreciation for the absurd. \n\n\n\nThe screening begins promptly at 7.30pm and is followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers\, hosted by Ellie Dobbs. Doors open at 6.45pm. \n\n\n\nFilms in the programme\n\n\n\nSigópása\n\n\n\n\nRakel Andrésdóttir | 2026 | 2 min \n\n\n\nA woman working in a fish and chip van slips into a cig-break reverie\, daydreaming about befriending a fish and returning it to the ocean. United by their shared love of smoking\, the pair hit the road in this charming hand-made animation blending watercolour and stop motion. \n\n\n\n\nTrout Lake\n\n\n\n\nFlorrie James | 2026 | 15 min \n\n\n\nA fishing trip-cum-stag do goes awry when it’s hijacked by a group of the groom’s disgruntled ex-lovers\, taking an increasingly surreal turn as the day unfolds. Shot on 16mm\, this strange\, offbeat comedy uses naturalistic\, semi-improvised performances\, poetry and song to play with intimacy and the rituals of male bonding. \n\n\n\n\nSarah\n\n\n\n\nLouis Scantlebury | 2026 | 3 min \n\n\n\nA conversation in bed takes an unexpected turn in this intimate short about the strange honesty that comes from speaking in the dark. \n\n\n\n\nNews from New York\n\n\n\n\nSara Sjölin | 2025 | 25 min \n\n\n\nAn artist is commissioned to work as a film extra\, shooting behind-the-scenes footage during a large-scale production set in a replica of the American Museum of Natural History. SUMMARY:Queer Recipes Archive
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday 14 NovemberTime: 2-3:45pmLocation: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham\, London\, SE15 4NPAdmission: Free \n\n\n\nWho gets to decide what makes a recipe ‘traditional’? And whose stories get left out along the way? \n\n\n\nTo queer a recipe is to question the instructions and traditions we inherit through food. Queer Recipes Archive invites you to rethink recipes and the stories they tell\, starting with a reimagined recipe prepared and performed live. You’ll explore how migration\, labour\, gender and power shape the ingredients we use and the ways we cook. \n\n\n\nThen it’s your turn. Participants will rewrite the recipe through their own memories and desires\, creating a double-layered zine that becomes part of a growing archive of stories told through food. Everyone will be able to take their zine home. \n\n\n\nPresented by Edible Theatre (@aftertaste.supperclub)\, led by Jo Pereira da Costa (@jopereiradcosta) and co-hosted by @pomegranate___seeds. \n\n\n\nOpen to adults aged 18 and over\, with a particular welcome to queer and trans people\, and anyone interested in food\, culture and storytelling. No cooking or writing experience is needed\, and all materials are provided.

SUMMARY:Subject To Change: Refusal and Selfhood in Feminist Film
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday 15 NovemberWorkshops: from 2:30pmPublic screenings: from 7:00pmLocation: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham\, SE15 4NPAdmission: FreeFilms:Sari Red (1988)\, dir. Pratibha ParmarCastles of Sand (1987)\, dir. Wendy WilliamsonBack Inside Herself (1984)\, dir. S. Pearl Sharp \n\n\n\nGet tickets\n\n\n\nSubject To Change: Refusal and Selfhood in Feminist Film comes to SET Social\, Peckham\, on Sunday 15 November 2026. Presented by Central Saint Martins’ MA Culture\, Criticism and Curation in collaboration with feminist film organisation\, Cinenova. \n\n\n\nBringing together three films from the Cinenova collection alongside participatory workshops through the afternoon\, Subject To Change explores how feminist moving image can create space for individuals to explore identities that resist the expectations placed upon them. \n\n\n\nThe programme features a special screening of Pratibha Parmar’s Sari Red (1988)\, Wendy Williamson’s Castles of Sand (1987) and S. Pearl Sharp’s Back Inside Herself (1984). Chosen for their poetic underscores and continuing political relevance\, the films invite an alternative way of considering how identity is constructed\, performed and reclaimed. \n\n\n\nAt the centre of the event is a question drawn from critical and theoretical enquiry: who gets to tell their own story? Through the lens of film\, the programme looks to creative responses to what happens when people refuse the roles assigned to them. Research into feminist representations of migration has shown how migrant women can be reduced to symbolic figures of vulnerability\, their individual voices and cultural differences obscured in the process. Made in the 1980s\, the films carry poignant messages of strength and resilience that endure today. \n\n\n\nThe free event runs through the afternoon\, welcoming audiences to take part in up to three optional workshops\, each pairing a screening with a creative activity and discussion. The day leads into an evening event with a main screening of all three short films\, followed by a social celebrating the important work of the Cinenova collection alongside the SET community.  \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nEach film will act as a starting point for a dedicated workshop\, creating space for participants to explore the themes raised by the work. \n\n\n\n2-3.30pm — Sari Red workshop on Clothing and Visual Identity \n\n\n\nResponding to Sari Red\, participants will use collage and communal mapping to explore clothing\, cultural symbols\, memory and the different identities we carry with us. Beginning with the question of what we wear on our bodies and what others might read from it\, the workshop will consider how identity is shaped both by ourselves and by environments around us\, questioning simplified expectations of what a woman\, a migrant or a community should look like. \n\n\n\n3.45-5pm — Castles of Sand workshop on Migration and Intergenerational Memory \n\n\n\nInspired by the dialogue in  Castles of Sand\, participants will take part in a letter-writing workshop.. Guests  will be invited to write towards someone from their past\, present selves\, or to someone who might come after. The letters offer a way of reflecting on inherited stories and cultural connections; writing across imagined distances of  borders and generations\, the workshop creates space to consider what we inherit\, what we carry with us and what we might choose to pass on. \n\n\n\n5.15-6pm — Back Inside Herself workshop on Poetry and Self-affirmation \n\n\n\nTaking Back Inside Herself and its celebration of a Black woman defining herself for herself as a starting point\, participants will engage closely with the film’s language\, sounds and images through guided creative-writing exercises. Together we’ll ask what it might mean to turn back towards oneself\, and how language can make space for that return. You might leave with a poem or a page of fragments; the aim is not to produce a finished piece\, but to listen\, experiment with language and consider what returning to oneself might look\, feel or sound like. \n\n\n\n7pm — Doors open for the evening screening \n\n\n\nTicketing\n\n\n\nEntry is free\, but we ask guests to  register via Eventbrite so we can manage numbers. Separate tickets are available for each workshop and for the evening screening\, so please book a place for every part of the day you’d like to attend. \n\n\n\nGet tickets\n\n\n\nAbout Cinenova\n\n\n\nPresented by Central Saint Martins’ MA Culture\, Criticism and Curation in collaboration with Cinenova\, a volunteer-led organisation dedicated to preserving and distributing feminist film and video. Cinenova currently distributes over 300 titles that include artists’ moving image\, experimental film\, narrative feature films\, documentary and educational videos made from the 1910s to the early 2000s.

SUMMARY:SET Film Festival 2026 - Night #3: A Conjuring\, A Summoning
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday 19 NovemberTime: Doors from 6:45pm | Screenings start 7.30pm promptLocation: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham\, London\, SE15 4NPAdmission: £9 general admission / £7 concessions \n\n\n\nBook tickets\n\n\n\nFor Night 3 of SET Film Festival 2026\, SET presents a series of films that use mysticism and iconography to traverse the unknowable terrains of grief\, nostalgia and longing. Through talismans and offerings\, trances and spells\, they probe dislocating encounters with the divine\, while seeking ways to commune with the past and imagine the future. \n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to be satisfied with that which cannot be discerned? How can we welcome the mystifying and inexplicable? Embracing the enigmatic rather than seeking to resolve it\, these films ask what it means to place our faith in the unseen and the unknown. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6.45pm. The screening will begin promptly at 7.30pm and will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers\, hosted by Amina Ali. \n\n\n\nFilms in the programme\n\n\n\nCorral de Tigres\n\n\n\n\nJuan Ignacio Slobayen | 2026 | 12 min \n\n\n\nSet in the Yverá Wetlands of Concepción del Yaguareté Corá\, Argentina\, Corral de Tigres explores the meeting point between popular devotion and the natural landscape. Tracing a spiritual and territorial cartography\, the film reveals a landscape in which faith\, memory and nature are deeply intertwined. \n\n\n\n\nObscura\n\n\n\n\nTimoteus Anggawan Kusno | 2026 | 14 min \n\n\n\nHaunted by nostalgia for a place they have never known\, a group of gallery workers steal a Mooi Indië landscape painting and drive towards the sea. The painting belongs to a colonial image-world that imagined the Indies as serene\, tropical and ripe for longing. Along the way\, keroncong songs\, staged colonial archives and figures from another time begin to intrude on their escape. What begins as a casual theft becomes a passage through trance\, possession and inherited memory\, as the fantasy of a colonial paradise reveals itself to be seductive\, unstable and impossible to own. \n\n\n\n\nAn Investigation into the Noseless Saint\n\n\n\n\nCaitlin Hazell | 2026 | 4 min \n\n\n\nNarrated by historian John Chatham\, whose research explores pilgrimage and power in the 14th century\, this whimsical and staccato short delves into the medieval mania surrounding nose loss and other bodily fears. Shot and hand-developed on 35mm\, it moves between artefacts and fantasy\, playing with ideas of distortion and existence beyond the physical realm. \n\n\n\n\nWales Visitation\n\n\n\n\nSadia Pineda Hameed | 2026 | 16 min \n\n\n\nRetracing Allen Ginsberg’s 1967 ‘trip’ to the Llanthony Valley\, Wales Visitation attempts to channel the poet and reconstruct his route through enactments\, alignments and apparitions. Using clues gleaned from Ginsberg’s poem of the same name\, the film unfolds as a semiotic trail where the filmmaker’s encounters echo and accumulate. \n\n\n\nHandheld footage of tourists\, sleeping horses\, birdcalls and day/night cycles signpost a route as it begins to form. At once a diary\, a dramatisation and a spiritual road movie\, Wales Visitation traces not a fixed path\, but the conditions under which something might be asked to return. \n\n\n\n\nA Story\, An Invocation\, An Opening\n\n\n\n\nRhiana Bonterre | 2025 | 5 min \n\n\n\nDeveloped through somatic\, intuitive dance workshops with a group of global majority participants\, the film brings together family archive footage of Trinidad Carnival and sonic rhythms from the region to summon a ghostly presence representative of personal and collective anxieties and transgenerational trauma. Through sound and movement\, it conjures a sensorial ritual from the stories held in the body and the spectres they manifest. \n\n\n\n\nSamba Infinita\n\n\n\n\nLeonardo Martinelli | 2025 | 15 min \n\n\n\nDuring Rio’s Carnival\, a street cleaner struggles to balance the loss of his sister with the demands of his work. Amid the celebrations\, he encounters a lost child and sets out to help him find his way home. \n\n\n\n\nTickets and booking\n\n\n\n\nGeneral admission: £9\n\n\n\nConcessions: £7\n\n\n\nFestival passes: £32 for one or £52 for two\n\n\n\n\nEach ticket includes a printed programme. SUMMARY:SET 91 Open Series - Writing the Afterimage with Elida Silvey
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday 21 NovemberTime: 3-4:30pmLocation: SET 91\, 91 Tabernacle Street\, Old Street\, EC2A 4JNAdmission: £12 \n\n\n\nBook tickets\n\n\n\nThe first lesson writers learn is grammar. The first lesson artists learn is perspective. How does a writer move beyond the lessons of language to play\, experiment and abstract a poem\, a story\, an essay?  \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, you’ll follow the way you see\, using the patterns and behaviours you unconsciously follow to reapproach your writing. By considering the image as a catalyst\, and the impressions it leaves behind as source material\, you’ll find new angles to your sentences\, poems and stories. \n\n\n\nYou’ll dive into our eyes’ behaviours by looking at images produced by other artists\, from photographers and painters to filmmakers\, to take notice of how our eyes wander\, what they pick up\, and what textures and colours stay behind as afterimages. Once you’ve become aware of your eyes’ tendencies\, you’ll follow some writing exercises to put these tendencies to the test. \n\n\n\nAfterwards\, there’ll be time to share if you feel open to it\, or chat about the process. \n\n\n\nIf you have something you’ve been working on\, bring it along\, or just bring a notebook and pen if you’d like to write by hand. \n\n\n\nAbout the organiser\n\n\n\nElida Silvey is a Chicana writer\, editor and artist based in London. Her work explores visual theory and its relationship with identity\, time and the construction of ‘the self’ as shaped by collective memory. Silvey regularly writes about these themes and her research practice on her Substack\, Through the Eye of a Needle. Silvey is an Editor at Montez Press and 1/2 of Dream Sequence\, an experimental film club dedicated to non-linear and hybrid cinematic practices. \n\n\n\nShe runs a radio interview series called Cafecito con Elida Silvey which feature conversations with friends—artists\, writers\, craftspeople and thinkers—in an unscripted space to pose sincere\, and often unanswerable\, questions about behind identity\, the creative process\, community and more. Her writing spans personal essays\, poetry\, criticism and experimental forms that explore how visual culture mediates lived experience. Her debut novel will be published by Montez Press in 2027. \n\n\n\nAbout SET 91 and the Open Series\n\n\n\nThis session is part of the SET 91 Open Series\, a programme of talks\, workshops and discussions supporting artists in navigating contemporary practice. \n\n\n\nSET 91 is SET’s contemporary arts gallery on Tabernacle Street in Old Street\, providing a non-profit platform for early-career and underrepresented artists to develop and present new work through exhibitions\, performances and public events. \n\n\n\nLearn more

SUMMARY:SET Film Festival 2026 - Night #4: Body Mapping [Online]

If there is a map to get there\, it can be found in the Atlas of our skin and bone and blood […] I am tracing a map with my fingertips\, walking into the heart of the storm that shakes my body and occupies the world.”  — Aurora Levins Morales \n\n\n\nFor the first online screening of SET Film Festival 2026\, SET presents a programme of films that reject the conceit of corporeal or geographical “borders”\, connecting political struggles\, health crises and ecological destruction as always already entangled. \n\n\n\nMoving between intimate encounters and contested territories\, these works explore borders as both geopolitical and embodied conditions that shape movement\, belonging\, and relations across human and more-than-human worlds. \n\n\n\nA filmmaker writes a love letter to her cat\, reflecting upon the complexities of animal companionship and captivity; another turns to the Białowieża Forest\, exploring the shared scars of its human and non-human inhabitants and imagining borders as spaces of transition; another draws upon the concept of barrunto—an omen\, or bodily sensing of unrest and environmental change—to trace connections across diasporic distances\, from Puerto Rico to Scotland\, and from earth to the planet Uranus.  \n\n\n\nIf the body is a map\, these films attune to its landscape as a means of storytelling and political resistance\, offering other ways of being in the world. \n\n\n\nFilms in the programme\n\n\n\nHenry Is a Girl Who Likes to Sleep\n\n\n\n\nMarthe Peters | 2026 | 14 min | Dutch \n\n\n\nThis film is a love letter to Henry\, the narrator’s cat\, with whom she shares a desire for sleep and a horizontal life. Unfolding within their shared bed-space\, we drift through slow rhythms of sighs\, purrs\, and changing bedsheets as the narrator reflects on the complexities of companionship and captivity. Here\, the bed is not solely a space of confinement for the sick and disabled body. Rather\, it becomes a domain of crip and more-than-human temporality\, a space where bodies rest in resistance to the demands of productivity\, embracing interdependence and living according to their own rhythms. \n\n\n\n\nbarrunto\n\n\n\n\nEmilia Beatriz | 2024 | 70 min | English \n\n\n\nIn Puerto Rico\, “barrunto” describes bodily unrest—an omen sensed through the environment: rain felt in the bones\, ants emerging before an earthquake. Taking this intuition as its point of departure\, Barrunto is an intimate exploration of grief and resistance across landscapes marked by displacement\, nuclear contamination and military occupation. The film is described by Beatriz as a practice of expanded griefwork\, tracing entangled histories of bodies and land through digital\, archival and 16mm film hand-processed in “grief tea.” \n\n\n\n\n[paˈlʲit͡sʲ]\n\n\n\n\nAnia Mokrzycka | 2023 \n\n\n\nIn [paˈlʲit͡sʲ]\, the Białowieża Forest—a landscape divided between Poland and Belarus by a 170-kilometre steel and barbed-wire border wall—becomes both protagonist and storyteller\, tracing the wounds of humanitarian and ecological crisis. Older than the border that cuts through it\, the forest undermines dominant narratives of territory and reminds us that “every living thing is both indigenous and a migrant.”  \n\n\n\n\nTickets and booking\n\n\n\n\nOnline tickets: £5\n\n\n\nFestival passes: £32 for one or £52 for two\n\n\n\n\nA viewing link will be emailed to ticket holders in advance of the screening\, giving you access to the programme online.
