SUMMARY:I'm Here But I'm Not a Cat
DESCRIPTION:SET Kensington\, 7-17 Ansdell St\, London W8 5BN \n\n\n\n\n\nPrivate View: Thursday 21st September\, 6–9pm \n\n\n\nOpen: 22nd September – 1st October 2023 (open 12–6pm daily\, closed Monday) \n\n\n\n\n\nI’M HERE BUT I’M NOT A CAT is a group show which takes its title from a viral video of a Zoom court case\, in which a lawyer is unable to disable a filter that makes him appear as a talking cat while he nervously repeats “I’m here live\, I am not a cat”. This video seems to encapsulate the condition we all find ourselves in today: an existence dominated by the prominence of the screen and an uneasy blurring of the virtual and the real. \n\n\n\n\n\nGrowing from Zoom conversations between the artists during the pandemic – which dramatically increased our time spent in the immaterial zone of the screen – this show explores the tension between the digital and the material through works that express a desire to reconnect with material reality and be physically present in the world. \n\n\n\n\n\nI’M HERE BUT I’M NOT A CAT features a group of artists whose strong background in moving image began to expand into other media during the pandemic\, each grapples with the dominance of the screen in our lives and the proliferation of digital images\, while seeking to also return to the physicality of making and being. \n\n\n\n\n\nWith a shared interest in the tension between imagined and lived realities\, Daniel & Clara’s and Adonia Bouchehri’s work explores subjective experiences of place – real\, imagined and virtual – across a breadth of cultural backgrounds and perspectives. Duncan Poulton’s digital collages bear witness to our hyper-connected\, screen-fuelled state of constant disorientation\, whilst Edwin Rostron’s intuitive paintings and hand-drawn animations deal with ideas of metamorphosis and multiplicity. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition will include moving image\, sculpture\, painting\, collage and photographs from exhibiting artists: \n\n\n\nAdonia Bouchehri https://adoniabouchehri.com / @adoniabouchehri \n\n\n\nDaniel & Clara https://danielandclara.com / @daniel_and_clara \n\n\n\nDuncan Poulton http://duncanpoulton.com / @duncpoulton \n\n\n\nEdwin Rostron http://www.edwinrostron.net / @edwinrostron2

SUMMARY:Fruit and Flesh
DESCRIPTION:Fruit and Flesh: A group show by Dio Dunbar & Jaffar Aly \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“Bringing together a dynamic blend of styles and mediums\, and with the help of sketchbooks\, doodles\, unfinished pieces and poems\, Lewisham based artists Dio Dunbar & Jaffar Aly take a playful dive into the process of portraiture.  \n\n\n\nIn this vibrant exhibition\, each artist cracks open the bones of their creative process\, unveiling to onlookers the inner workings and charisma of their art\, and in turn\, themselves. \n\n\n\nSo much wonder and beauty can be found within the task of creation. This process of producing a finished piece is rarely linear\, takes on many forms\, is often ugly and sometimes transcends a page. Behind clean cut lines and fluid blending is a world of ideas stored in miscellaneous places\, and in this duo show\, the artists intend to invite you inside. \n\n\n\nFollowing his 6-month residency at SET Lewisham\, Dio decided to honour the progress and development he made both technically and mentally as an artist\, and so “Fruit and Flesh” was conceived. Together with fellow artist Jaffar Aly\, he curated this exhibition in response to his rediscovered love for creating.” \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPrivate View: Friday 27th October\, 5-8pm \n\n\n\nOpen: 28th-29th 4-8pm and 30th-31st by appointment

SUMMARY:Fire in the Head
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of sculptures\, works on paper and original music by Irish artist\, harpist and singer Sheila Moylan. \n\n\n\nPrivate View: Thursday 23 November 6-9pmOpen by appointment: 23 November – 3 December 2023 (email info@sheilamoylanart.com to make an appointment) \n\n\n\nPerformances: Saturday 25 November 4-6 PM featuring experimental musicians Flooded Access and Georgina Brett \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition: \n\n\n\nA long-term studio holder at SET\, Sheila’s art weaves in and reinterprets the spiral\, lozenge and circle designs inherent in Irish megalithic art\, which dates back to 3\,000 BCE\, drawing upon its myths and poetry. The exhibition’s title is drawn from the line “I am the God who puts fire in the head\,” from the oldest poem in the Irish language. The faded marks on the stones are brought to life through graphic art informed by Sheila’s research into the ancient art’s design principles. Beyond her visual art\, Sheila is a composer and performer of her own music. For this exhibition\, she’ll collaborate with musicians who have drawn inspiration from the exhibition’s themes to create a series of one-off live musical compositions. \n\n\n\nAbout Sheila Moylan: \n\n\n\nSheila has always made art\, whether it was making props as window display artist and poster designer in Dublin or later when she emigrated to London working with clay and plaster casting on her Fine Art and Psychology B.A. at U.E.L. After a long career of supporting excluded young people\, – including running an alternative to GCSE where art was the main subject – she became a self employed musician and art tutor in 2015. During the pandemic she was furloughed and began making art full time in her living room. Her yearning for her homeland meant connecting through the monuments and myths online\, and began her research and passion for the neolithic art of Ireland.

SUMMARY:Unknown Territory
DESCRIPTION:Opening: Thursday 8 February\, 6.30pm-9pmExhibition Continues: Thursday-Sunday\, 12-6pm until Sunday 18 February‘Things emerge\, we turn them over and they disappear.’ \n\n\n\nUnknown Territory is a group exhibition that investigates our human interactions\, weaving daily rituals\, the search for intimacy\, and the remnants left by industrial living to forge new dialogues. \n\n\n\nArtists Alex Stone\, Ben Topping\, and Valentino Vannini respond to the gallery space\, delving into the synergies of their practices to create a collaborative installation where the boundaries between their work and the site become indistinct. Working from the formal arrangement of the space and using grids of many forms as a starting point\, they have utilised materials such as concrete\, lipstick\, copper\, and hair in order to observe and conduct urban rituals\, considering both the past and future histories of the space. They invite the viewer to observe from the distance of the street and wander within.

SUMMARY:I will live many years in this room
DESCRIPTION:SET are delighted to announce ‘𝙄 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙢’\, a solo exhibition from artist Ashleigh Fisk\, with new writing by Gwen Dupré.Opening on the leap year\, a day often regarded as a fracture in standard time\, the exhibition takes the historic practice of letter locking as its starting point – a method of intricately cutting and folding a written letter in order to seal it\, thereby ensuring the secrecy of its contents and verifying the author’s identity.Working in dialogue with writer and researcher Gwen Dupré\, Fisk utilises craft and storytelling traditions to conjure objects infused with queered and collective histories: ceramics\, iron-gall ink\, and materials foraged near Fisk’s home in Sussex are enclosed and entrusted with messages of secret desire. SET Lewisham’s gallery will be recomposed as a domestic space\, reflective of womens’ ubiquitous experiences of mental and physical confinement as well as comfort and solace. Furnishings\, objects and stained glass create a playful\, anachronistic room in which many lives\, both real and imagined\, have been lived.Over the course of the show\, the exhibition will host a series of public workshops and gatherings ranging from visual scribing and letter locking to queer reading groups. Dates and booking information to be announced.Exhibition opens Thursday 29 February 6pm – 9pmExhibition continues Thursday – Sunday\, 1.30pm – 6pm until 24 MarchSupported using public funding from Arts Council England.Work by @ashleigh_fisk and writing by @gwenrcdupre#acesupported

SUMMARY:Funny Dread
DESCRIPTION:Private View: Thursday 25 April\, 6 – 9 PM
Exhibition Open: Thurs – Sat\, 25 April – 4 May\, 12 – 6 PM \n\n\n\nA group exhibition at SET Ealing exploring humour in the absurd. \n\n\n\nArt has long served as a tool for exploring the meaning of life\, and the gallery space can be a place where we can react to the reality of existence. Much like in Albert Camus’s ‘The Myth of Sisyphus’\, we repeat the same actions again and again\, only sometimes acknowledging the pointlessness of it all. Although often bleak\, there is humour in the ridiculousness of being. \n\n\n\nThe ‘Benign Violation Theory’ attempts to explain humour’s existence\, claiming that it only occurs when something seems wrong\, unsettling\, or threatening\, but simultaneously seems okay\, acceptable or safe. The works in this show explore this contradiction between the dull and nonsensical\, the dreary and silly; the funny ridiculousness of being alive. \n\n\n\n‘Funny Dread’ will run until 04 May 2024. \n\n\n\nCurators: (francesca_dobbe_)and Laura Sutton (@lk_sutton). \n\n\n\nArtists: @studio.edie@sassyli@kialytihngang@nhensey@youkiyin@lk_sutton@francesca_dobbe_ \n\n\n\nCuratorial Assistant: @dhurga_

SUMMARY:Comms
DESCRIPTION:Opening 9 May 6.30PM – 9PMExhibition continues 9 -23 May\, by appointment. Please email thomas.lawanson@gmail.com to arrange a viewing. An exhibition of works by Akinsola Lawanson\, Chen Di\, James Raphael Tabbush and Jelena Viskovic. \n\n\n\nStaged at a site figured as a historic cybernetic node – and where the first transatlantic submarine cables were built – the artworks in ‘Comms’ form twisted marginal notes on scientific worldviews\, surfacing through systems theories and process philosophies at different levels and scales. Images of pipes and flows\, ritual conferences\, animate objects\, and intimate machines fill the empty office space\, drawing connections between communicative systems\, nervous systems\, infrastructures\, global governance\, and online performance and ritual.

SUMMARY:Affinities
DESCRIPTION:PV: Thursday 11 July 6-9pm \n\n\n\nOpen: Wednesdays > Sundays 12-5pm \n\n\n\nBrishty Alam’s works are invested with a magical\, shape-shifting quality. They adapt to\, resist and converse with their environments\, and when brought together\, they unfold their many aspects in gregarious and often surprising ways. Born in London\, Brishty lives and works in Vienna.  \n\n\n\nKatherine Waters explores the shaping qualities of space\, gravity\, time\, relation and inclination. Informed by contemporary dance practices\, in considering the membranes and transitions between internal and external states\, Katherine complicates simple transmission\, seeking to open up a space of grace.  \n\n\n\nAffinities brings Brishty and Katherine’s work together for the first time. Though their practices and processes differ\, they share common concerns with materiality\, movement\, distance\, value and fluid states. Separated by geography\, and connected by years of friendship and conversation\, the exhibition creates a place for their works to speak with each other while remaining distinct.

SUMMARY:Introductions and Break Ups
DESCRIPTION:Julie Brixey-Williams MRSSMandeep Dillon MRSS20 – 26 October 2024 \n\n\n\nIntroductions and Break Ups is a research-based project in the SET Ealing Space that will take placeover 7 days. Both artists were recipients of residencies on the aa2a Practice Development Scheme2023-2024 at Bucks New University and will be using the time to appraise\, unpick and develop theworks.A recurring theme are materials that have degrees of transparency\, and whilst responding to thearchitecture the artists will explore their subconscious and conceptual draw to thetransparent. The large windows of SET Space will become the viewing arena for passersby towatch the process unfold. This is a process-led project and there will not be a traditional Private View\, a soft opening on thefinal Saturday will be an opportunity to see how the space has changed through the explorationof ideas and interventions. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSET short text poster copyDownload
