SUMMARY:No You’re Not\, Yes I Am: A Portrait of Autistic Women - SET Lewisham Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:No You’re Not\, Yes I Am is a photography project by documentary photographer Rosie Barnes\, developed over six years between 2018 and 2024. The exhibition brings together portraits and extended interviews with autistic women from different communities. \n\n\n\nMany of the participants describe themselves as high-masking autistic women who were diagnosed later in life. Their stories reflect the long path many women take before receiving a diagnosis\, and the ways autism can be misunderstood or overlooked. \n\n\n\nEach portrait is shown alongside the participant’s own words\, reflecting on diagnosis\, identity and everyday life. The testimonies speak about navigating a world that often misunderstands autistic women and girls. \n\n\n\nTogether\, the portraits and interviews offer a closer look at these experiences and invite visitors to reflect on how autism is recognised and understood. \n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, a panel discussion on Thursday 26 March will bring together contributors and specialists to explore the themes raised by the project and discuss how society can better support autistic women and girls. \n\n\n\nResidents\, families and community groups are invited to visit the exhibition and engage with the stories on display. \n\n\n\n\nExhibition details\n\n\n\n\nPublic opening event: Monday 23 March\, 6-8pmExhibition run dates: Open daily between 24-28 March\, 2-6pmPanel discussion: Thursday 26 March\, 6-8pmLocation: Unit 1\, Lewisham Retail Park\, Lewisham\, London\, SE13 7RZAdmission: Free; no booking required for exhibition. If you’d like to attend the panel discussion\, please RSVP at outreach.admin@drumbeat.lewisham.sch.ukAccessibility visits can be arranged through Drumbeat Outreach:S.Gannon@drumbeat.lewisham.sch.uk \n\n\n\nAbout the artist\n\n\n\nRosie Barnes is a fine art documentary photographer whose work explores the human condition\, neurodiversity and our relationship with the non-human world. \n\n\n\nOver a thirty-year career she has developed long-form photographic projects that challenge assumptions\, expand public understanding and give visibility to overlooked subjects. Her work has appeared in The Guardian Weekend\, the Financial Times and projects with the Wellcome Collection. \n\n\n\nShe is widely recognised for her work exploring autism. Her book Understanding Stanley was widely reviewed and exhibited across Europe\, while the portrait series No You’re Not\, Yes I Am was funded by the Wellcome Collection\, with two portraits selected for the Taylor Wessing National Portrait Prize. \n\n\n\nBarnes lives in London and her practice is informed by her own experience of neurodivergence. \n\n\n\nPartners and support\n\n\n\nThe exhibition is presented with support from Drumbeat Outreach and marks the beginning of Autism Awareness Month in Lewisham. \n\n\n\nIt is supported by Lewisham Council Public Health as part of the Lewisham All Age Autism Strategy\, and contributes to the Partnership for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) programme.

SUMMARY:Soft Ground: Textiles and Self-Soothing Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Soft Ground is a four-month programme of free weekly drop-in textile-based art sessions\, designed to support mental wellbeing through creativity\, routine\, and communal making. \n\n\n\nDrawing from neurodivergent practices and trauma-informed methodologies\, the sessions are open to all\, with a particular welcome extended to neurodivergent participants. The programme offers a gentle\, sensory-aware environment where participants can engage with textile processes at their own pace\, using tactile making as a tool for self-soothing\, co-regulation\, and creative exploration. \n\n\n\nEach two-hour session is led by a rotating group of women artists recognised for their inclusive practices and lived experience of neurodivergence: Kim Chin\, Birungi Kawooya\, Sue Mayo\, and Jenny McIlhatton. Participants are invited to drop in\, try different approaches to textile making\, and take part in a supportive communal space focused on reducing isolation\, building trust\, and nurturing emotional wellbeing. \n\n\n\nSessions follow a consistent weekly format designed to create structure and accessibility\, particularly for those who experience anxiety\, sensory overload\, or social isolation. While the programme centres neurodivergent experiences\, it is open to anyone in the local community interested in creativity as a pathway to wellbeing. \n\n\n\nAll sessions take place at SET Social\, our arts and social club in Peckham. Each session concludes with refreshments\, creating a relaxed environment for conversation and connection. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDates: Every Friday\, from 20 February – 5 JuneTimes: 2-4pmWhere: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham\, SE15 4NPTicketing/registration: All workshops are free\, available to book via Eventbrite. \n\n\n\nBook ticket\n\n\n\nProgramme credits \n\n\n\nCurated by Sylvia Keck\, Community Engagement Curator at Looking Forward.Realised in partnership with SET and with support from the National Lottery Community Fund. \n\n\n\nAbout the organiser: Founded in 2019\, Looking Forward works internationally across contemporary art\, design\, and socially engaged practices. SUMMARY:Everything Must Go - Closing Exhibition at SET Byward Street
DESCRIPTION:SET Byward Street presents Everything Must Go\, a week-long group exhibition\, artist sale\, and durational performance by Associate members Leily Moghtader Mojdehi\, Kasturi Kiritharan\, Poppy Driver\, and Abi Palmer. \n\n\n\nSince 2022\, wedged between souvenir shops and office towers\, SET Byward Street has operated as both an artist studio and an undercover gift shop. To passers-by\, Tower Hill Trinkets was a mysterious shop window offering a tongue-in-cheek look at what artists “do all day.” To its residents\, it’s been a studio\, an exhibition space\, and a collaborative home for emerging artists to grow and unfold. \n\n\n\nEverything Must Go is a final wake for SET Byward Street\, which closes its doors in April 2026. As the artists empty their shelves\, we invite the public to witness the dissolution of the studio and take a piece of its history with them. \n\n\n\nAbout the programme\n\n\n\nEverything Must Go reflects on the experience of making art in a city defined by constant movement and disappearance. It is an exhibition that doubles as a closing-down sale\, where the boundaries between “art” and “stock” are intentionally blurred. Visitors can browse a curated selection of new works\, artist-made merchandise\, and studio ephemera\, all available for purchase as the space is cleared. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the exhibition is the final chapter of Crip Casino. Originally created by Abi Palmer between 2018 and 2022\, the Casino was an interactive gambling arcade that used hacked fruit machines to explore the “luck” of the healthcare system. Instead of money\, the machines produced absurd medical diagnoses and bureaucratic fragments of difficult conversations disabled people are forced to have with doctors and carers. Following the death of collaborator Jackie Hagan in 2024\, the arcade became a site of grief. \n\n\n\nIn a performance titled Death of a Casino\, the machines will be systematically dismantled and their components dispersed. This act of destruction is not just a logistical necessity of the move\, but a reflection on the loss of disabled spaces\, artworks\, and communities. As the studio is vacated\, the work itself ceases to exist in its functional form\, leaving only its fragments behind. \n\n\n\nProgramme schedule\n\n\n\nWhile the exhibition\, talks and performances are free and open to all\, weekday viewings and appointments can be booked via studiobyward@gmail.com. Weekend hours are 12-6pm. \n\n\n\nPublic Opening EventTuesday 24 March\, 6-9pm \n\n\n\nA celebratory opening featuring ice cream\, stick-on tattoos\, artist-made postcards\, and drinks. This is the final opportunity to experience the Crip Casino in its “living\,” functional state before the dismantling begins. \n\n\n\nExhibition: ‘Everything Must Go’Wednesday 25 – Sunday 29 March (Weekdays by appointment; Saturday & Sunday 12pm–6pm)A final showcase and “closing down sale” of the Byward Street studio. The public is invited to browse and buy new works\, artist-made merchandise\, and studio ephemera by the four resident associate members.Performance: ‘Death of a Casino’Wednesday 25 – Sunday 29 March (Weekdays by appointment; Saturday & Sunday 12pm–6pm) \n\n\n\nA five-day performance by Abi Palmer and friends. Over the course of the week\, the Crip Casino arcade will be physically dismantled. Visitors are invited to witness this process and take home a piece of the working casino as it is broken apart and dispersed. \n\n\n\nTalk: ‘An Oral History of Crip Casino’Sunday 29 March\, 2pm \n\n\n\nArtist Abi Palmer in conversation with Jay Dalton and Nick Murray. The discussion explores collaboration\, the legacy of performer Jackie Hagan\, and what it means when disabled-led artworks disappear due to lack of space. \n\n\n\nTalk: ‘Everything Has Gone’Sunday 29 March\, 4pmA “house-cooling” conversation between the resident artists. As the final items are cleared\, the group will reflect on the two-year history of the Byward Street studio and what happens next for their practices. Both talks are free to attend. No booking required. \n\n\n\nContributing artists\n\n\n\nLeily Moghtader Mojdehi\nWebsite: leily-mojdehi.comInstagram: @mojjyart \n\n\n\nLeily Moghtader Mojdehi is a London-based artist and a BA Fine Art graduate from Goldsmiths\, University of London (2021). Her practice intertwines painting\, textiles\, and sculpture to create mixed-media works that function as “woven diaries.” By drawing inspiration from ancient traditions\, digital algorithms\, and personal narratives\, Mojdehi explores the boundary between the real and the representational. Her densely layered collage compositions serve as embellished stories of unplaceable experiences. \n\n\n\nShe exhibited at galleries and museums internationally\, including Quench (Margate)\, South London Gallery (London)\, Ferens Art Gallery (Hull)\, Saatchi Gallery (London)\, Zhan Art I Space (Selangor\, Malaysia) and SET 91 (London). She was selected for the 2022 Bloomberg New Contemporaries\, shortlisted for the Ingram Prize (2023)\, and awarded the City of London x Outset Studiomakers Prize (2022). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbi Palmer\nWebsite: abipalmer.comInstagram: @abipalmer_bot \n\n\n\nAbi Palmer is an artist and writer whose work explores “sick bodies\,” viscous textures\, and ecological landscapes through film\, text\, sculpture\, and sensory intervention. Her notable solo projects include the mixed-media exhibition Slime Mother (Chapter\, Cardiff; Site\, Sheffield)\, the film series Abi Palmer Invents the Weather (Artangel)\, and the interactive gambling arcade Crip Casino (Tate Modern\, Somerset House\, Wellcome Collection). She is the author of Slugs: A Manifesto and Sanatorium. \n\n\n\nPalmer’s group exhibitions include Channelling for the Frieze Corridor Commission (2023) and Crip Arte Spazio at the Venice Biennale (2024). She is a Bloomberg New Contemporary Artist (2023) and has been recognised with the Henry Moore Foundation’s ‘Award for Sculptors’ (2025) and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s ‘Award for Artists’ (2022). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKasturi Kiritharan\nInstagram: @shoesatthe_door \n\n\n\nKasturi Kiritharan (b. 1998\, London) explores the blurring of the real and the imagined\, investigating how the act of recollection can tip memory into fiction. Using a process-led approach\, she employs thin washes of oil paint\, surface scratching\, sanding\, and staining to mimic the fluidity of memory. This speculative method allows everyday images recorded in her sketchbook or camera roll—from moths and horses to brick structures and rocky beaches—to re-emerge through the material possibilities of paint and surface. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPoppy Driver\nInstagram: @poppaea.driver \n\n\n\nPoppy Driver (b. 2000) is a Trinidadian-British artist. Drawing from childhood nostalgia\, her work tells cautionary tales of womanhood. The dynamics in her work vary\, ranging from romantic to platonic to moments of self-discovery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout SET’s Associate Members Programme\n\n\n\nThis exhibition is presented as part of SET’s Associate Members Programme\, which offers artists studio space alongside access to project spaces and opportunities to independently curate exhibitions\, workshops\, and events. \n\n\n\nThe programme supports a wide range of practices\, from performance and installation to music\, sound\, print\, and textiles\, and is designed to provide space\, visibility\, and development opportunities for early-career and underrepresented artists working in London. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nWhen: 24-29 March Address: SET Studio\, 7 Byward Street\, London\, EC3R 5ASAccess: Level access and a large\, wide-entry toilet (no handrails). Sunday talks will not be mic’d or captioned live; captioned recordings will be shared online afterward \n\n\n\nEnquiries: studiobyward@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Braiding Sweetgrass Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the return of spring\, join us at SET Social for the Braiding Sweetgrass Reading Circle\, a small reading group exploring Robin Wall Kimmerer’s influential book Braiding Sweetgrass. \n\n\n\nMeeting every two weeks from 15 March to 24 May\, the circle invites participants to read and discuss the book together over tea in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Each session will focus on a different section of the text\, beginning with the introduction at the first meeting. \n\n\n\nDrawing on her life as an Indigenous scientist\, a mother and a woman\, Kimmerer explores how other living beings such as plants\, animals and ecosystems offer lessons about reciprocity\, care and responsibility. Through stories that move between ecology\, science and Indigenous knowledge\, the book explores our relationship with the earth and the importance of living in respectful kinship with the more-than-human world. \n\n\n\nThe reading circle will be a space to discuss these ideas together and reflect on how they might influence our daily lives. If gardeners attend\, the group may also explore ways to connect some of the book’s teachings with the SET Social Community Garden. \n\n\n\nOpen to anyone interested in nature\, gardening or anti-colonial perspectives on our relationship with the land. The group will remain small to allow space for discussion. \n\n\n\nTea will be provided. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDates: Every two weeks from Sunday 15 March-24 MayTime: 4.30-6.30pmLocation: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham SE15 4NPEntry: Free\, drop-in \n\n\n\nSessions will take place indoors around the tables in the main hall\, or outdoors in the garden when the weather allows. \n\n\n\nFacilitator and artwork: \n\n\n\nReading circle facilitated by @jadesrooomPoster artwork by @brog.de.mer \n\n\n\nPlease note: If you would like to join but are unable to purchase the book\, please contact the host at @jadesrooom.

SUMMARY:Permacomputing club
DESCRIPTION:How can we rethink our relationship to harmful technologies? \n\n\n\nJoin the Permacomputing Club every Monday at SET Social for a weekly meet-up exploring this question and more sustainable ways to use and think about digital tools. \n\n\n\nInspired by permaculture\, permacomputing is an anti-capitalist project that challenges the environmental and social damage caused by modern technology. Drawing on ideas from degrowth\, ecologism\, decolonial thinking and intersectional feminism\, it looks for alternatives to the energy-intensive systems shaping today’s tech landscape. \n\n\n\nEach session emphasises collaborative discussion over solo tinkering. Participants are invited to share a problem they’ve read or experienced\, where they’ll receive feedback and work together to find solutions. \n\n\n\nIn a culture dominated by harmful tech practices\, including AI\, the Permacomputing Club aims to build a more thoughtful space to explore new and different possibilities. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome\, though women and non-binary participants are particularly encouraged to join. \n\n\n\nPlease bring your own tech and have a look at our guiding principles before attending: permacomputing.net/Principles. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDate: Every MondayTime: 6.30-7.30pmTickets: Free entry. SUMMARY:Doublewalker - SET Vauxhall Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Doublewalker explores processes of repetition and fragmentation\, and the differences that emerge through them. Taking its title from the etymology of ‘doppelgänger’\, meaning ‘twin stranger’\, the exhibition considers how objects and spaces can appear familiar while remaining slightly out of reach. \n\n\n\nBringing together seven artists working across sculpture\, installation\, and sound\, the exhibition is curated by SET studio member Laura Higgins and presented at SET Vauxhall. \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition\n\n\n\nUsing processes of fragmentation and remaking\, Doublewalker examines the presence of distant yet recognisable symbols within contemporary culture. Through this\, works repeat and rework familiar forms\, drawing attention to the small differences between things that might at first appear the same. \n\n\n\nAcross the exhibition\, artists explore personal relationships with place\, often focusing on sites that might otherwise go unnoticed. \n\n\n\nPresented as one of the first exhibitions in SET Vauxhall\, Doublewalker responds directly to its surroundings. As a repurposed building shaped through reuse\, elements of its previous life remain visible. Through site-specific installation\, the exhibition nods to these prior uses and the building’s existing structure\, while giving it a new identity within the exhibition. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also focuses on the spaces between objects and how we experience them alongside others. By repeating and breaking down forms\, the works invite us to look more closely at objects and environments as their meaning begins to shift. \n\n\n\nSome works also touch on wider themes including colonial histories\, inheritance and self-positioning within the current postmodern context. \n\n\n\nThrough these approaches\, Doublewalker considers how repetition and difference shape the way we understand objects\, spaces and the world around us. \n\n\n\nA live performance by Nell Castor will take place on the opening evening at 7:30pm. The work imitates the selling of medicine\, creating opportunities for interaction between the artist and visitors. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nOpening: Thursday 9 April\, 6-9pmDates: 10-26 AprilOpening hours: Thursday-Sunday\, 12-6pmLocation: SET Vauxhall\, Camelford House\, 89 Albert Embankment\, LondonAdmission: Free \n\n\n\nContributing artists\n\n\n\nNell Castor\nNell Castor is a sculptor and digital artist. Her work is founded on a personal lexicon of color and symbolic characters that wrestle with universal human emotions. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area\, she now lives and works in London.Website: https://nellclo.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/nell.castor/ \n\n\n\n\nSuzanne Elven\nSuzanne Elven navigates time at an angle\, often recording collision and motion from several temporal stand points. Her current focus lies in foregrounding objects that come into zones of impact – drums\, tennis rackets. Elven’s research lies in the balance between fiction and reality\, drawing from recent work in set building which has her considering the lifespans and solidity of worlds.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/suzanne.elven/ \n\n\n\n\nKairi Tokoro \nKairi Tokoro is a Japanese artist based in London. His practice explores sound\, sculpture\, and performance. His work focuses on the interdependence of objects and human life—how human interaction with materials alters their shape\, color\, and function\, and in turn\, how these changes affect us.Website: https://kairitokoro.com/worksInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/kairitokoro/ \n\n\n\n\nLaura Higgins\nLaura Higgins is a sculptor and visual artist who documents an ongoing process-led inquiry into connecting material with meaning. Often interested in fabrication processes\, ways of bespoke making and the sites that facilitate making\, the findings around new processes are employed and reimagined to evoke contemplation around hidden sites and personal memories. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lhiggins1616/ \n\n\n\n\nBeatriz Mayorga\nAt its core\, Bea Mayorga’s art practice investigates the concept of the replica\, exploring how copying can both transmit knowledge and act as a tool of cultural control by focussing on materials that are dismissed as “fake”\, such as imitation marble\, artificial tears and false gold. \n\n\n\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/beaamayorga/ \n\n\n\n\nElena Garcia-Sirvent\nElena Garcia-Sirvent is a sound and video artist based in London. Her practice explores the intersection of sound\, materiality\, and perception. Focusing on how sound can interrupt\, penetrate\, and reshape both physical and psychological environments. Inspired by ‘Foley’\, She references the reproduction of everyday sounds\, how sounds can be reimagined\, reproduced and displaced. \n\n\n\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/elegarciasirv/ \n\n\n\n\nIsabel Jones\nIsabel Jones’ work converges painting and sculpture. SUMMARY:Trojan Horses - SET Vauxhall Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Trojan Horses explores how images can hold and carry meanings that are not immediately visible. Taking its cue from a text by Andrew Cranston\, the exhibition considers how aesthetics can act as a point of entry into complex and often uncomfortable subjects. \n\n\n\nBringing together twelve artists working across painting and drawing\, the exhibition is co-curated by SET studio members Tom Houlihan and Elisa Terranera\, and is presented at SET Vauxhall. \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition\n\n\n\n“Beauty can be a useful Trojan horse to smuggle in darker ideas”\, writes Andrew Cranston in his book Never a Joiner. He is reflecting on his painting Vague feelings of dread (2022)\, where a small group of fish hover above the pearlescent tiled floor of a pond. For Cranston\, their subtle\, shifting movement recalls submarines and warships in the Mediterranean\, becoming a way of expressing unease shaped by conflict and its ongoing presence. \n\n\n\nTrojan Horses takes this idea as its starting point. Bringing together painting and drawing\, the exhibition asks how artists use aesthetics to engage with social and political realities. \n\n\n\nAcross the exhibition\, the works touch on themes including class\, feminism\, war\, mortality\, identity and religion. Here\, beauty is not simply decorative or resolved; it operates as a point of entry – something that draws viewers in before revealing more layered and challenging ideas beneath the surface. Or\, as Cranston puts it\, “darker ideas”. \n\n\n\nAll twelve artists share a background in observational drawing. At a time marked by political and technological uncertainty\, Trojan Horses reflects on what this longstanding language of picture-making can still hold\, and how painting and drawing continue to offer ways of engaging closely with the world today. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nOpening: Thursday 9 April\, 6-9pmDates: 9-26 AprilOpening hours: Thursday – Sunday\, 12-6pmLocation: SET Vauxhall\, Camelford House\, 89 Albert Embankment\, LondonAdmission: FreeThe exhibition is also viewable by appointment.
