SUMMARY:Flow: Materiality in Motion
DESCRIPTION:SET is excited to present the group show Flow: Materiality in Motion at our SET Kensington site. \n\n\n\nFeaturing works from Naomi Ellis\, Anusheh Zia\, and Fleur Dempsey. The works in the show will range from sculpture and installation to painting\, print and photography\, all of which explore the ways in which materials can be re-contextualised and reimagined\, and how these transformations can reflect broader social and cultural shifts. In a world that often feels disconnected and fragmented\, Flow: Materiality in Motion will serve as a reminder of the deep interconnections that exist between all things. \n\n\n\nPrivate view: Oct 19th 18:30pm \n\n\n\nShow Open: Oct 20th-29th 12:00-6:30pm

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Lovebug by Daisy Lafarge
DESCRIPTION:Join Peninsula Press and the think big\, read library at SET Social for the launch of Lovebug by Daisy Lafarge: readings by Francis Jones\, Holly Pester and Nisha Ramayya. Music by Han (Boosterhooch). \n\n\n\nFree to attend\, RSVP here \n\n\n\nLovebug The pathogen arrives anyway and takes a seat at the table. Conditioned to welcome damage\, I am curious about this uninvited guest. You must sit down\, says Love\, and taste my meat. \n\n\n\nIn Lovebug\, Daisy Lafarge explores metaphors of love and disease as she seeks to understand human vulnerability and our intimacy with microbial life. \n\n\n\nTurning to microbiology\, mysticism\, and psychoanalysis – as well as the raw materials of love and life – Lafarge navigates the uncomfortable intimacy between the human body and the many bacteria\, viruses\, and parasites to which it is host. \n\n\n\nLovebug is a book about the poetics of infection\, and about how we can learn to live with multispecies ambivalence. How might we forge non-phobic relationships to our ‘little beasts’? How might we rewild our imaginations? In weaving the personal with the pathological\, Lovebug complicates the idea of coherent selfhood\, revealing life as a site of radical vulnerability and an ongoing negotiation with limit. \n\n\n\nReaders:Daisy Lafarge is a writer based in Glasgow\, UK. Born in Hastings\, she has lived in Scotland since 2011. She is the author of the novel Paul (Granta 2021; Riverhead 2022)\, which won a Betty Trask Award and was a New York Times Editor’s Choice\, and the poetry collection Life Without Air (Granta 2020)\, which was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize and awarded Scottish Poetry Book of the Year.  Lovebug (Peninsula 2023) is her latest work. \n\n\n\nFrancis Jones is a writer and artist from Ireland\, living in London. Their pamphlet sacrificial fabric was published by SPAM in 2021. They wrote a short experimental film “I Thought I Hated U\, Moon Snail” in collaboration with artist Jack Hogan for the final exhibition of the Whitney ISP\, New York\, which was also screened at the Colloquium Unpopular Culture at NYU in May 2023. They are currently working on an exhibition of writing\, sound and illustration with Josie Perry\, titled The Thieves – which is forthcoming at the Centre of Contemporary Arts\, Glasgow in 2024.   \n\n\n\nHolly Pester is based in Colchester. Publications include a collection of poetry\, Comic Timing (2021\, Granta)\, a radio play\, Eclogues for Idle Workers (2019\, BBC Radio 4 and Distance No Object)\, a record\, Common Rest (2016\, Prototype) and archive fanfiction\, Go to reception and ask for Sara in red felt tip\, (2015\, Book Works). The Lodgers\, a novel\, is due out in February ’24 also with Granta.  \n\n\n\nNisha Ramayya grew up in Glasgow and now lives in London. Her poetry collection States of the Body Produced by Love (2019) is published by Ignota Books. Her second collection will be published by Granta in 2024. Tentatively called Now Let’s Take a Listening Walk\, it hazards a musical journey through history\, myth\, and sci fi.  \n\n\n\nDJ:Han (Boosterhooch) is a DJ\, producer\, performer\, sound designer\, and healthcare worker based in Glasgow. She is a resident DJ at La Cheetah\, runs Events Research Programme (a monthly subscription-based events series that focuses mostly on local experimental musicians)\, and edits radical healthcare magazine The Guts of It.

SUMMARY:I'm Here But I'm Not a Cat
DESCRIPTION:SET Kensington\, 7-17 Ansdell St\, London W8 5BN \n\n\n\n\n\nPrivate View: Thursday 21st September\, 6–9pm \n\n\n\nOpen: 22nd September – 1st October 2023 (open 12–6pm daily\, closed Monday) \n\n\n\n\n\nI’M HERE BUT I’M NOT A CAT is a group show which takes its title from a viral video of a Zoom court case\, in which a lawyer is unable to disable a filter that makes him appear as a talking cat while he nervously repeats “I’m here live\, I am not a cat”. This video seems to encapsulate the condition we all find ourselves in today: an existence dominated by the prominence of the screen and an uneasy blurring of the virtual and the real. \n\n\n\n\n\nGrowing from Zoom conversations between the artists during the pandemic – which dramatically increased our time spent in the immaterial zone of the screen – this show explores the tension between the digital and the material through works that express a desire to reconnect with material reality and be physically present in the world. \n\n\n\n\n\nI’M HERE BUT I’M NOT A CAT features a group of artists whose strong background in moving image began to expand into other media during the pandemic\, each grapples with the dominance of the screen in our lives and the proliferation of digital images\, while seeking to also return to the physicality of making and being. \n\n\n\n\n\nWith a shared interest in the tension between imagined and lived realities\, Daniel & Clara’s and Adonia Bouchehri’s work explores subjective experiences of place – real\, imagined and virtual – across a breadth of cultural backgrounds and perspectives. Duncan Poulton’s digital collages bear witness to our hyper-connected\, screen-fuelled state of constant disorientation\, whilst Edwin Rostron’s intuitive paintings and hand-drawn animations deal with ideas of metamorphosis and multiplicity. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition will include moving image\, sculpture\, painting\, collage and photographs from exhibiting artists: \n\n\n\nAdonia Bouchehri https://adoniabouchehri.com / @adoniabouchehri \n\n\n\nDaniel & Clara https://danielandclara.com / @daniel_and_clara \n\n\n\nDuncan Poulton http://duncanpoulton.com / @duncpoulton \n\n\n\nEdwin Rostron http://www.edwinrostron.net / @edwinrostron2

SUMMARY:Dishes that Remind Us of Home
DESCRIPTION:Bring your favourite dish (one that reminds you of home) to share with other attendees\, and join us for an evening of food\, drinks and music! \n\n\n\nAs part of the closing day of “De\, desde\, en\, entre\, hacia” the artists and curator invite you to prepare a dish that reminds you of home and to share it with the rest of the attendees of this food gathering. Food can bring about nostalgic feelings but also a lot of joy; we want to explore this by means of different flavors coming from diverse backgrounds. We wish to create a space where food and stories may be shared\, exchanging flavors and bits of wisdom. You can bring salads\, rices\, stews\, breads\, desserts — everything will be well-received and shared between all. We’d love to receive you to talk\, listen to music and enjoy the exhibition one last time. \n\n\n\nFREE to attend. Link to tickets here. \n\n\n\nIt doesn’t matter if you can’t bring a dish! You can bring whatever you please to share: it can be something to drink\, some candy\, etc\, but the idea is not to come empty-handed
