DESCRIPTION:SET Open Decks is a weekly night happening at SET Social where the booth is open for anyone who wants to play\, experiment with tracks\, or just hang out with other local DJs. \n\n\n\nEvery third Wednesday of the month\, SET Open Decks expands into an extended session\, running from early evening through to midnight. The booth stays open throughout\, giving more time to play\, listen\, experiment\, and settle into the space. \n\n\n\nThe extended session keeps the same open\, easy-going approach as the weekly night. DJs who want to play can put their name in a hat\, with 30-minute slots drawn at random on the night. There’s no fixed format and no expectation to perform. DESCRIPTION:The Tiny Oscars is an inclusive\, free-to-enter independent film night that invites filmmakers from around the world to create a short film in just one week. The event brings the community together to share joy\, watch films on the big screen\, celebrate with awards\, and end the night with a dance. \n\n\n\nThe initiative aims to encourage making for the sake of making. Many aspiring creators have personal projects they dream of completing\, but without real incentive\, those ideas often fall into the “idea graveyard.” The Tiny Oscars provides that incentive – a clear deadline and a supportive creative community.The ‘One Week Movie Challenge’ began with co-founder James Papper\, who struggled with overthinking and unfinished projects. In late 2024\, he discovered that setting a short deadline and holding himself accountable helped him break through a lifelong creative block. Inspired by that breakthrough\, The Tiny Oscars now shares this process with a wider audience\, empowering filmmakers to overcome perfectionism and rediscover the joy of creativity. \n\n\n\nWhether an experienced director or a complete beginner\, participants in The Tiny Oscars have the opportunity to see their films on the big screen\, connect with fellow creators\, and celebrate the act of making. DESCRIPTION:The Upper Matrix of Human Error opens at SET Lewisham on 13 November\, 6-9pm. \n\n\n\nBringing together new works by Associate Members\, Peter McNelis and Charlie Fogg\, the exhibition explores communication\, paranoia\, and power within the structures that shape digital and social life. \n\n\n\nFogg’s films dissect the mechanics of speech and narrative in digital spaces\, manipulating both filmic and verbal language to expose how meaning slips even as it’s being constructed. His fragmented scripts and narrators—whether real or artificial—highlight the instability of communication\, particularly when filtered through systems designed to distort and replicate. \n\n\n\nMcNelis’ film\, drawing\, textual\, and sculptural works are structured around performances of legal and social contracts\, and the fictions that underpin them. \n\n\n\nTogether\, their works critique the technologies and networks of power that govern contemporary visual culture. DESCRIPTION:Introducing Night 1 of the SET Film Festival 2025: ‘A Token\, A Sign’\, taking place at SET Social\, Peckham on Thursday 6 November.  \n\n\n\nThis night’s programme of short films attempt to decipher the latent meanings\, codes\, and symbols of landscape and place. \n\n\n\nIn these works\, history and memory are inscribed in the contours of land and cityscapes as codes to be decrypted\, mapping forgotten histories of dispossession\, extraction\, and trade\, as well as more personal and idiosyncratic stories. Previous shows include Substantive Archival Challenges\, which observed an all-male guerrilla theatre troupe putting on clandestine productions. Collaboratively\, Maddocks and the performers explored surveillance\, Stanislavsky\, content creation\, archetypes\, and pagan folk plays\, building a playful world where the Id is unleashed\, analysed\, and reordered.  \n\n\n\nMiddleton Maddocks is an artist working in various modalities. Their practice spans mapping\, language\, nonsense-making\, and symbolic personal histories. DESCRIPTION:On the eve of Halloween\, Peckham Life Drawing is hosting a bonus Life Drawing is in Fashion session. This ongoing series explores creative and experimental approaches to life drawing beyond traditional observation\, bringing together models\, artists and performers who shape each session through their own practices and ideas. The Halloween Eve special continues this approach\, offering another chance to draw\, experiment and spend time together. \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome\, whether you’ve drawn before or not. Her first book\, co-created with Celia Croft\, studied gender identity and gender role-bending tendencies in female bodybuilding. DESCRIPTION:Super Simple Oscillator Building Workshop invites participants to explore the basics of DIY sound-making through a hands-on electronics session at SET Social\, as part of Anti-university Now 2025. \n\n\n\nOpen to all levels and backgrounds\, this workshop introduces how to build a small oscillator circuit using only a breadboard\, a few capacitors\, and other simple components. Together\, we’ll create noisy little instruments and experiment with how electricity becomes sound. \n\n\n\nFacilitated by Pei\, a multidisciplinary artist working with experimental noise and DIY electronics\, the session encourages playful engagement and curiosity rather than technical perfection. The programme is centred on the work of filmmaker Tomonari Nishikawa\, who passed away in April of this year\, celebrating his playful experiments with 16mm film. \n\n\n\nThe screening includes Nishikawa’s Tokyo Ebisu/Shibuya duology\, featuring in-camera visual effects capturing Tokyo’s busiest metro line\, alongside Sound of a Million Insects\, Light of a Thousand Stars\, in which Nishikawa buried a 100ft roll of Tungsten film beneath fallen leaves near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant from sunset until sunrise. Through this methodical approach\, chance emerges within his structured cityscapes as traces of light\, commuters\, and cars appear as unexpected surprises. \n\n\n\nAlso included is Vincent Grenier’s Time’s Wake (Once Removed). Figurative face jugs became popular in the 13th century as craftspeople embraced decorative and creative styles. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, you will: \n\n\n\n\nUse coiling techniques to create a jug form\n\n\n\nAdd features to sculpt a figure or face on your jug\n\n\n\nDecorate your piece with locally sourced Peckham clay slip\n\n\n\nOptionally have your jug fired and glazed with our handmade wood ash glaze\n\n\n\n\nThe session is focused on the tactile experience of sculpting\, learning\, and playing with clay. There is no pressure to produce a “finished” or “perfect” piece.
