SUMMARY:Braiding Sweetgrass Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the return of spring\, join us at SET Social for the Braiding Sweetgrass Reading Circle\, a small reading group exploring Robin Wall Kimmerer’s influential book Braiding Sweetgrass. \n\n\n\nMeeting every two weeks from 15 March to 24 May\, the circle invites participants to read and discuss the book together over tea in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Each session will focus on a different section of the text\, beginning with the introduction at the first meeting. \n\n\n\nDrawing on her life as an Indigenous scientist\, a mother and a woman\, Kimmerer explores how other living beings such as plants\, animals and ecosystems offer lessons about reciprocity\, care and responsibility. Through stories that move between ecology\, science and Indigenous knowledge\, the book explores our relationship with the earth and the importance of living in respectful kinship with the more-than-human world. \n\n\n\nThe reading circle will be a space to discuss these ideas together and reflect on how they might influence our daily lives. If gardeners attend\, the group may also explore ways to connect some of the book’s teachings with the SET Social Community Garden. \n\n\n\nOpen to anyone interested in nature\, gardening or anti-colonial perspectives on our relationship with the land. The group will remain small to allow space for discussion. \n\n\n\nTea will be provided. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDates: Every two weeks from Sunday 15 March-24 MayTime: 4.30-6.30pmLocation: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham SE15 4NPEntry: Free\, drop-in \n\n\n\nSessions will take place indoors around the tables in the main hall\, or outdoors in the garden when the weather allows. \n\n\n\nBi-weekly schedule\n\n\n\n15 March: Introduction and Chapter 1 – Planting Sweetgrass 29 March: Chapter 2 – Tending Sweetgrass12 April: Chapter 3 – Picking Sweetgrass26 April: Chapter 4 – Braiding Sweetgrass10 May: Chapter 5 – Burning Sweetgrass24 May: Epilogue  \n\n\n\nFacilitator and artwork: \n\n\n\nReading circle facilitated by @jadesrooomPoster artwork by @brog.de.mer \n\n\n\nPlease note: If you would like to join but are unable to purchase the book\, please contact the host at @jadesrooom.

SUMMARY:Club Bananas Experimental Drawing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Club Bananas returns to SET Social this May\, expanding its residency with a new focus: Experimental Drawing. \n\n\n\nFollowing the success of our collage and craft workshops\, Club Bananas moves into the medium of drawing. Led by local artist Banana Holdwin\, this session investigates surrealist and abstract techniques\, continuing the club’s mission to explore creativity without the pressure of perfection. \n\n\n\nThe session encourages participants to investigate drawing through playfulness and movement\, rather than focusing on exact replication or realism. It is a space to embrace looseness\, texture\, and the contemporary style adopted by the artist—a perfect environment to let your inner child play and experiment freely. \n\n\n\nParticipants are encouraged to embrace messiness and enjoy the process. Whether you are a regular at Club Bananas or joining us for the first time\, this is an inclusive space to connect with others and explore your creative voice. \n\n\n\nAll materials are provided\, including pencils\, pens\, coloured pencils\, crayons\, and card. You are always welcome to bring your own favourite sketchbook or specific drawing tools if you prefer. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday 2 JuneTimes: 6-8pmLocation: SET Social\, Red Bar\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham SE15 4NPTickets: Starting from £5. SUMMARY:The West African Literary Circle
DESCRIPTION:The West African Literary Circle invites readers\, thinkers\, and the culturally curious to gather for its new monthly residency at SET Social. \n\n\n\nDedicated to celebrating literature from across West Africa and its diaspora\, the circle is a relaxed and welcoming space for open discussion\, shared reflection\, and community connection. Whether you are deeply familiar with the text or joining out of interest in West African storytelling\, all backgrounds are welcome. \n\n\n\nThe Series: Things Fall Apart\n\n\n\n\nFor our first three sessions\, we will be discussing Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. This landmark novel examines tradition\, masculinity\, and the seismic cultural shifts of pre- and post-colonial Nigeria. To ensure the discussion is accessible and deep\, we have broken the book down into three monthly themes: \n\n\n\n\n\n2 June | Session 1: Okonkwo’s World (Chapters 1-8)\n\n\n\n7 July | Session 2: Colonialism (Chapters 9-19)\n\n\n\n4 August | Session 3: The Collapse (Chapters 20-25)\n\n\n\n\nHow it works \n\n\n\nDon’t worry if you haven’t finished the chapters or are new to the group. Each session includes focused time to read a specific chapter silently or as a group\, so initial reading is not strictly required to participate. \n\n\n\nThe bar and cafe will be open throughout for attendees to replenish themselves during and after the circle. \n\n\n\nIf you are experiencing barriers to accessing a copy of the book\, the host is happy to email a digital copy to potential attendees. Please reach out via Instagram at @walitcircle to request one. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday 2 June (and every first Tuesday of the month)Times: 7-8:15pmLocation: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham SE15 4NPTicketing: Free of charge. No booking required . \n\n\n\nAbout the organiser:The West African Literary Circle is a community-led reading group dedicated to the exploration and celebration of stories from West Africa and its diaspora. By providing a consistent space for dialogue\, the circle aims to foster a deeper understanding of West African storytelling and heritage. \n\n\n\nGot a question?
