DESCRIPTION:Mohammed el-Kurd’s Perfect Victims and the Politics of Appeal published last year and was an instant bestseller\, and has since been translated into multiple languages. \n\n\n\nMore often than not\, international media and political platforms demand that Palestinians perform a perfect victimhood in order to be admitted as human\, even as the crimes of their occupiers are explained away and given the benefit of doubt. In this historically grounded book\, written with a poet’s precision\, El-Kurd’s argues for a discourse and a politics in which Palestinian humanity exists on its own complex\, truthful terms. \n\n\n\nJoin us for the first in-person UK event for Perfect Victims. El-Kurd will be in conversation with writer and PalFest coorganizer Yasmin El-Rifae. Using the net as a compositional structure that forms both the skeleton and exoskeleton of the works on display\, A Great Big Net considers the precise moment when the freedom of the grid hardens into a trap. \n\n\n\nContributing artists\n\n\n\nMassimo Franco\nMassimo Franco currently lives and works in London. Recently he’s made a return to printmaking\, specifically a return to the book format. Notably this work displays an interest in part to purely abstract imagery. Massimo completed his training painting at Glasgow School of Art\, drawing at Royal Drawing School and printmaking at Camberwell College of Art. \n\n\n\n\nNed Elliot\nNed Elliott is an artist from London. His subject is nature\, and his focus moves from the small to the cosmic. His gaze is drawn to those things which are simultaneously frail and beautiful; a moth\, a feather\, a flower. He depicts how different elements of existence\, sentient\, insentient\, intersect and coexist in the world\, creating pictures which grow out of the confusing and elusive beauty of life. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @ned_elli0tt \n\n\n\n\nDaisy Nutting\nDaisy Nutting is an artist exploring memory\, storytelling and perceptions of ownership. Documenting moments of balance and imbalance within nature\, Daisy’s etchings\, drawings and paintings are made from a desire to connect with her surroundings and an attempt to take ownership of land that is not hers\, suggesting that the memory of a place is a kind of possession to rival capitalist notions of accumulation and proprietorship. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @daisynutting \n\n\n\n\nAgnes Treherne\nAgnes Treherne lives and works in East Sussex. Drawing from life underpins her painting and printmaking – her drawings are a response to the transcendent nature of the world. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @agnestreherne \n\n\n\n\nTara Versey\nTara Versey works across painting\, printmaking and drawing\, exploring the emotional and physical experience of being alive. Combining observation\, memory and imagination\, she creates works that seek balance between the human form\, architecture and the natural world. Rejecting polished interfaces and digital convenience\, the participating artists embrace hands-on experimentation\, chance encounters\, and material limitations as creative drivers. \n\n\n\nSurfaces vibrate\, circuits respond to natural phenomena\, and kinetic gestures become instruments. Here\, sound and visuals are treated as something discovered—unearthed through play\, trial\, and close observation. He performs and composes under the moniker Haddow\, improvising with handmade instruments and found sounds\, and shares these methods via the ‘Unprecious Instrument’ workshops. He also co-runs live sound art event SAOM\, produces monthly radio broadcasts for arts journal FIELDNOTES\, and works as an illustrator and designer for various music related projects. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @robshuttz / @haddowsound \n\n\n\n\nDavid Sappa\nDavid Sappa works across sound sculpture\, improvisation and field recording. DESCRIPTION:SET 91 presents Heat Seeking\, the inaugural exhibition of our second six-month curated programme. Bringing together new works by Millie Earthy\, Joe Garcia\, and Francisco Zhan\, the show explores printing techniques as processes of transformation\, reproduction\, and desire. \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition\n\n\n\nHeat Seeking is a group exhibition exploring printing techniques as processes of slippery reproduction and desire. Using a variety of methods including 3D printing\, paper clay\, decals and UV printing\, the exhibition brings together works shaped by slow\, almost devotional processes requiring precision\, alongside playful and often humorous exchanges between image and material. \n\n\n\nFundamentally\, it is a show about desire\, attending to its different forms: commodification and branding\, transubstantiation in Chinese joss paper traditions\, the politics of excess\, texture\, and the buffoonery of rebranding and repurposing industrial materials with personal imagery. \n\n\n\nThe pairings inhabit their own kind of poetry as images are forged with light\, heat and exposure onto unexpected surfaces\, producing fragile\, mutable containers. SUMMARY:Comrades (1986): A Screening by Circle Dance
DESCRIPTION:Come along to SET Social on 16 May for a rare screening of Bill Douglas’ 1986 film Comrades (1986)\, a cinematic telling of the history of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The Martyrs were a group of agricultural workers from Dorset who’s efforts in 1834 to form a ‘friendly society’ – widely recognised as an early form of trade union – earned them deportation arrest and deportation to Australia.Moving\, wild\, righteous\, rhapsodic and psychedelic\, Comrades blends English weirdness\, folk horror\, socialist history and an insistence on the uplifting power of collectivity with an ensemble cast includes Robin Soans\, Keith Allen\, Vanessa Redgrave and James Fox\, with a great score to boot. \n\n\n\nThis film is rarely screened\, so this is a great opportunity to witness a fantastic piece of cinema celebrating an even prouder history. DESCRIPTION:Upcycling Your Garms is an intimate embroidery workshop centred on slow\, hands-on making. \n\n\n\nRooted in traditional Armenian embroidery\, this session offers space to step away from constant consumption and reconnect with making something with intention. No pressure\, no perfection – just learning\, stitching\, and thinking together. \n\n\n\nParticipants are invited to reflect on what it means to refuse\, to unlearn\, and to choose differently\, while creating a personal piece to take home. \n\n\n\nThe workshop begins with an introduction to Armenian embroidery and its cultural context\, followed by a guided stitching session. SUMMARY:Rule of Thumb - SET Lewisham Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Rule of Thumb investigates the systems of discipline and authority that shape the human body. Bringing together four artists working across painting\, sculpture\, and installation\, the exhibition examines how power is naturalised through physical presence. \n\n\n\nPresented at SET Lewisham as part of the Associate Members Programme\, the exhibition is co-curated by the participating artists. \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition\n\n\n\nThe exhibition takes its title from the idiom “rule of thumb”\, a phrase denoting approximate measurement famously\, if controversially\, linked to a legal loophole for domestic violence. Rule of Thumb uses this etymology as a point of departure to explore how power is mapped onto the body within both domestic and institutional spheres. \n\n\n\nThroughout the space\, symbols of power are rendered as bodily objects: bodybuilders flex alongside legal iconography and heraldry; armour-like structures offer a tense balance of protection and restraint; and garments hang like evidence\, relics or unresolved testimonies. \n\n\n\nBy deconstructing these forms\, Rule of Thumb draws attention to the hidden codes of conduct that dictate movement and behaviour. At its core\, the practice investigates vulnerability and power\, the seen and unseen\, and the unstable boundaries between them\, creating layered and emotionally charged spaces where viewers may feel exposed and implicated. \n\n\n\n\nPhoebe Randall\nPhoebe Randall translates photographs of performance and human spectacle into oil paintings on canvas. Recent works examine demonstrations of masculinity\, heroism and violence staged under the guise of sportsmanship. Working selectively from her source material\, she remains only partially faithful to the original image. In doing so\, she unsettles the choreography of conflict and the performative mechanics of violence embedded in Western painting traditions. This two hour gathering invites both experienced lacemakers and total novices to come together to make lace\, share skills\, and work on projects in a relaxed and supportive environment.Founded by Amelia White and Lauren Watson in 2023\, the club is a community led response to bobbin lace appearing on the Endangered Crafts red list. The craft has always relied on the social exchange of skills\, and the club uses this legacy of collective making as its foundation. Whether you are drawing for the pure joy of it or developing a professional folio\, these sessions are built on “serious play” and a commitment to diversifying how we represent the human form. \n\n\n\nLed by artist Luce Russell (MA RCA)\, the workshop is an inclusive\, supportive environment where everybody (!) is more than welcome.
