SUMMARY:The West African Literary Circle
DESCRIPTION:The West African Literary Circle invites readers\, thinkers\, and the culturally curious to gather for its new monthly residency at SET Social. \n\n\n\nDedicated to celebrating literature from across West Africa and its diaspora\, the circle is a relaxed and welcoming space for open discussion\, shared reflection\, and community connection. Whether you are deeply familiar with the text or joining out of interest in West African storytelling\, all backgrounds are welcome. \n\n\n\nThe Series: Things Fall Apart\n\n\n\n\nFor our first three sessions\, we will be discussing Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. This landmark novel examines tradition\, masculinity\, and the seismic cultural shifts of pre- and post-colonial Nigeria. To ensure the discussion is accessible and deep\, we have broken the book down into three monthly themes: \n\n\n\n\n\n2 June | Session 1: Okonkwo’s World (Chapters 1-8)\n\n\n\n7 July | Session 2: Colonialism (Chapters 9-19)\n\n\n\n4 August | Session 3: The Collapse (Chapters 20-25)\n\n\n\n\nHow it works \n\n\n\nDon’t worry if you haven’t finished the chapters or are new to the group. Each session includes focused time to read a specific chapter silently or as a group\, so initial reading is not strictly required to participate. \n\n\n\nThe bar and cafe will be open throughout for attendees to replenish themselves during and after the circle. \n\n\n\nIf you are experiencing barriers to accessing a copy of the book\, the host is happy to email a digital copy to potential attendees. Please reach out via Instagram at @walitcircle to request one. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday 2 June (and every first Tuesday of the month)Times: 7-8:15pmLocation: SET Social\, 55a Nigel Road\, Peckham SE15 4NPTicketing: Free of charge. No booking required . \n\n\n\nAbout the organiser:The West African Literary Circle is a community-led reading group dedicated to the exploration and celebration of stories from West Africa and its diaspora. By providing a consistent space for dialogue\, the circle aims to foster a deeper understanding of West African storytelling and heritage. \n\n\n\nGot a question?
