Anti-colonial Reading Group
21 February @ 14:00 – 16:00
How are colonial histories and environmental crises connected? And what might ecology look like when thought through decolonial struggle?
The Anticolonial Reading Group returns for a new series of sessions exploring ecology through an anticolonial lens. Building on previous sessions that explored foundational anticolonial thinkers such as Frantz Fanon and Walter Rodney, the cycle will focus on Malcolm Ferdinand’s groundbreaking book Decolonial Ecology: Thinking from the Caribbean World (2022).
Across sessions running from October to February, the group will read and discuss Ferdinand’s work, which brings together environmental justice and decolonial thought. Drawing on Caribbean histories, the book examines how ecological crises are inseparable from the legacies of colonialism, slavery, and racial capitalism.
Together, participants will explore questions such as: what does it mean to imagine liberation as an ecological project, and ecology as a decolonial struggle? How might we work toward a “world in common” grounded in justice, care, and collective survival for humans, non-humans, and the environment alike?
The reading group is open to all. Participants from gendered and racialised minorities, as well as those from decolonial backgrounds, are especially encouraged to take part.
