Communal Clay – Medieval Figurative Jug Workshop

30 September 2025 @ 18:30 20:30

Explore the art of face jugs using traditional hand-building techniques with clay. Figurative face jugs became popular in the 13th century as craftspeople embraced decorative and creative styles.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Use coiling techniques to create a jug form
  • Add features to sculpt a figure or face on your jug
  • Decorate your piece with locally sourced Peckham clay slip
  • Optionally have your jug fired and glazed with our handmade wood ash glaze

The session is focused on the tactile experience of sculpting, learning, and playing with clay. There is no pressure to produce a “finished” or “perfect” piece. Any leftover clay is recycled to minimise waste and keep workshops sustainable.
