SET 91 presents Junk Mail Cheerleader, the third exhibition of its second six-month curated programme. Curated by artists Ismay Bright and Peter Eason Daniels, the show brings together new works across their respective practices of mosaic and film photography.
About the exhibition
This exhibition is anchored in the process of collecting and preserving found text through their respective mediums of mosaic and film photography. Equally interested in examining the impact of materiality and context, the two artists present works that isolate phrases from their original surroundings to offer up new readings.
Bright presents a series of figurative mosaic facades that explore the limits of the written word and trace how our relationship with text shifts as it passes from one context to another.
Eason Daniels’ work is concerned with collection and permanence. Using cameras as tools to document, suspend and repeat, he presents a series of darkroom prints made from fragments of text sliced from years of collected negatives. These fragments are digested and pieced together in the darkroom, forming phrases such as “Only love walks”.
Contributing artists
Ismay Bright
Ismay Bright (b. 1997, Scarborough) creates text-based, conceptual work rooted in exploring recontextualisation and the limits of the written word. Interested in words’ ability to shape-shift depending on their context, material, delivery and reader, she creates works plagiarised from the sea of language we wade through daily: TV game shows, end credits, online fragments and street signs. Most recently, Bright has worked predominantly with mosaic; using hand-cut stained glass to build the works. Through this process, she materially anchors found phrases that would otherwise pass quickly through everyday life, tracing the shifts in our relationship to words as they pass from one context to another.
Bright studied her foundation at Leeds College of Art before completing her BA in Sculpture and Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art. She last exhibited in 2019 at both Leeds Art Gallery and South London Gallery as part of New Contemporaries. She currently lives and works in London.

Peter Eason Daniels
Peter Eason Daniels (b.1996, Cardiff) is an artist based in London. Often working collaboratively, he moves between fine art, photography, and film, with his work being seen as much in gallery spaces as it is accompanying music. He has worked with artists including Mount Kimbie, Squid, Jerkcurb and Deathcrash, amongst many others.
Eason Daniels studied his foundation at Chesterfield College of Art before completing a BA in Sculpture and Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art.
